Hail Brave Hearts

Finally the warmth rolls in, the clouds part way and the sun can shine. The wintry blasts are receding and the rain pours down in buckets, but the earth yields up her garden and it’s bountiful as always. A bit later than it usually is, but still in aromatic abundance, the wildflowers show off their colorful delights. Dandelion, the master of spring, with more to eat than to discard, pops up in it’s usual multitudes for us to indulge our natural cravings in. So plentiful, it’s sunshine, so full of goodness, it’s dietary delicious, so easy to find and to consume, the harvest is in, and it’s golden.

Lilac is purple, or white or pinkish, full of fragrance and honey. The birds and the bees indulge in it’s goodness and the tiny nests of songbirds hide in the abundant foliage. It’s sweet and full of goodness, another springtime treasure. Fill up the larder with sweet smelling cooking. It’s unusual, but that is what the garden is, fragrant and sweet and delicious.

The roses are in full bloom, as eye catching as always. I reach out to shake their showy, fragrant blooms. The yield from the rose is small but mighty as I stock my fragrance bar. This tasty large lilac flower, this small delicate rose, add to my concoctions of sweet treats which fill the larder with unusual delicacies. I love the spring! It’s so wild and tasteful, a banquet of floral bouquet. Stalk the elusive wild spring flowers to fill the pantry and to delight your taste buds with this unusual gourmet.

My backyard garden is in full bloom. Nothing is discarded if its edible. That new weed, might just be the next experiment in decadent floral cooking. The flowers are picked in full bloom, with many seasonal recipes to try. Lilac and dandelion,rose and fireweed, bring treats of liqueurs, sorbets, honey and biscuits, which last long past the flowery show of colorful blossoms.

It’s so self indulgent it becomes perfume with fragrant oils for the bath. Long past spring our bodies are soothed by the richness of the flower garden with it’s plentiful blooms. Violets and pansies spring into sight. A gorgeous salad, a scrumptious palate waiting to be plucked and devoured.

So its spring and the first harvest is in. Full of vitamins and minerals and something sugary and fragrant and unique. The self indulgent past time of foraging Earth’s delights, makes a simple act of cooking a gourmet’s treat. The Earth’s powers. Fragrant, colorful, beautiful, delicious and nutritious, coming from your garden, in a brand new way..

A Garden of Earthly Delight

Joy to you and to your garden too.  The blessings of spring turn to summertime things, as the fruit sets on the vine.  Welcome to summer and to a harvest of plenty, as fruit and vegetables and flowers grow.   Smell the aroma, the scent of your haven, a garden is paradise on earth, if it’s  laden.  Bees and butterflies, birds of a feather, pollinate the flowers of trees and heather.  Your garden of earthly delight.  A recipe to try something new, a dandelion ripens its head, just for you.  The colorful, showy, large yellow flower, is filled with nectar for pollinators to swallow.  Lovely and fresh, it’s springtime bouquet, fills our pantry on many a day.  Weeds begone, they belong in the past, harvest this flower, they might not last.

Now, in the garden, my roses bloom,  a new source of food, has just found room.  Flowers and scent, the aroma is perfume,  my cooking has escalated to aromatherapy blooms.  The delicious petals, the fragrance and color, I dine with delight at my new found wonder.  Taste the petals and taste the blooms, flowers are delicious and filled with perfume.  Soaps and lotions, smell their scent, we dine in splendor with what the earth sends.  Herbs which were weeds, fill our bowls, and flowery syrups delight our souls.  Needy and hungry we scrounge for more, as the delectable bites, need time to mature.

Another flower fills the garden quickly.  Lilac is a source of food for our pantry.  Brilliant and purple it’s showy head, casts spells of flavor upon our heads.  Heady and delightful, the flowers of the pantry, change our world from dowdy to fancy.  Look at us, look what we dine on!  The sumptuous garden of flowers to thrive on.  Gourmet for us all, as we ponder our dinner.  Calorie count?  We’re really not thinner.  Jams and syrups, wine and souffle, a delight from the garden, will always make our day. Recipes to share, summer is here, as we wait for the berries to ripen each year.  But this year is different, it has a new taste, as flowers and petals garnish our plates.  Fragrance and cordials, liqueurs and jams, petals and soaps and aromatic plans.  The earth with abundance spreads joy to us.  Gather and enjoy, the new harvest is a must.

The tender shoots of weeds to pull, become the salad, we all know.  Herbs and flowers with syrupy dressings, are a feast of plants which were pulled as a menace. Come and enjoy, the new harvest is here.  Brilliant and colorful, it speaks to our ears.  Listen to that sound, from great mother Earth.  Eat and be joyous, quench your thirst.  A tasty drink, a scone, a tart, will all  change our world right from the start.

Eat and be healthy, enjoy the new view, flowers for consumption has just made the news.  Carefully selected, a bright sight to behold, in comes the new, to replace the old.  Caution to the wind, eat your garden, but be cautious to indulge in only the good ones.  Don’t poison yourselves on inedible plants.  Eat only what’s good for you, not the bugs and the ants.  Eaten correctly and enjoyed wisely, the new bountiful garden will savor your meals.  Live wisely.

Take Flight

Take Flight

Good morning brave hearts.
The cooler fall air reminds the birds of the season of change. They call to each other to gather around. Come near! they sing. They clamour together and fill the trees, calling for each and every one of them to join the flock. It is fall. Time to move south.
The birds natural inclination to move to warmer climates, brings the masses of migrating birds together. The gregarious birds fly together for protection and flight paths. They keep each other in sight, the older ones, showing the way to the younger ones the way, the strong leading the weak. The birds will travel hundreds of kilometers in search of new food sources, shelter, homes and habitats.
The skies fill with the wonder of migration.
The long flight to ponds and forests in far off places. Will they still be there for the birds? Will those protected places that the wildlife need so badly for survival still exist? One more year of environmental protection, one more year of the survival of so many species.
Thousands fly south to warm climates, their small bodies too fragile for cold temperatures and as the leaves turn colour and fall, the protection of the trees vanishes. The winds are strong and the birds take flight to escape.
Will they return?
We protect our own forests for the salvation of the planet, air, weather, for us, for wildlife and for beauty. The forest provides a beautiful backdrop to our lives. The gracious trees, home to many animals, insects and birds provide homes, shelter from the elements, wind, sun and rain and food.
The brave birds fly on a course to the unknown. They will winter wherever they can find food and shelter. Wherever the compassionate human has protected them and the environments that they need for survival. Parklands, forests, back yards with shrubs and trees.
The migration is a marvel of distance and stamina.
How many will come back to us?
The quiet of autumn fills our ears as the chattering birds leave us behind.
The monarch butterflies have already gone on their long flight to Mexico.

Hibernating animals dig into the earth for their long winters sleep and ponds become quiet.
Trees shed their leaves in preparation for their own winters sleep.
The land is changing. The scattered seeds of summer plants find resting places in the soil. New life for next year.
Prepare for winter, it will come soon.
The peaceful land keeps us busy with fall harvest. Hay for the livestock, fall fruits and vegetables for us. The farmers markets swell with food and our own food baskets are heavy.
The earth saves us once again.
